Information Storage and Retrieval

Introduction to the basic concepts of database and information storage systems. Topics include data models, database design theory, database performance, transaction processing, web-database interaction, techniques for handling large volumes of data, and contemporary database issues. Hands-on projects emphasize basic database and information storage and retrieval techniques. Final Project.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to

  1. demonstrate basic working knowledge of database management system (DBMS) concepts,
  2. understand the relational model,
  3. use fundamental SQL concepts to formulate database queries,
  4. normalize a relational database to at least third normal form (3NF),
  5. analyze the factors affecting database performance,
  6. analyze social and ethical implications of databases,
  7. design and implement web-based applications using databases, and
  8. be familiar with database topics of current interest.
